They may not be the largest, but Wellington beaches are certainly the cutest, convenient to visit and diversified. There’s also plenty dotted around the Capital, but we’ve chosen to focus our attention on the top five Wellington Beaches.

1. Oriental Bay – located only 5 minutes’ walk from the CBD, Oriental Bay may be small, but it’s mighty in character. With over 22,000 tonnes of golden sand transported from the South Island, the man-made beach is always packed locals who know they’re onto a good thing! There are cafes and restaurants galore, and Te Papa and Freyburg Pool are just a short walk away.
2. Petone Beach – on the other side of the harbour, Petone Beach is a long sandy beach with plenty of parking. The length of the beach makes it ideal for walkers and joggers, with some great cafes only a few minutes away. It can get quite nippy here if the wind is come off the Strait.
3. Days Bay – also on the other side of the harbour, Days Bay is a stones’ throw from Eastbourne Village, is small and sandy. It’s highly desirable by locals due to the ability to reach here via car or boat.
4. Lyall Bay – if you want to do a bit of plane spotting, Lyall Bay beach is for you. Extending from Moa Point (the start of Wellington airport’s runway), this is a popular surf beach with paddlers and wave riders! The local café also played host to Prince Harry and Megan when they visited in 2018 too.
5. Scorching Bay – located on the Miramar peninsula, the golden sandy beach of Scorching Bay is always popular. There’s a great little café here too, and you may even see some of NZ’s famous residents around, such as Sir Peter Jackson.
