Wellington is full of things to do and places see - but for a newcomer to any city, it can all seem a little overwhelming at first. For those visiting on a work placement or extended getaway, it never hurts to have a place to start when you set out to experience our beautiful capital! Here are five tools you can carry around in your pocket that will help with things like getting around, checking the weather, ordering food and choosing places to go. Take your Welly visit to the next level, all from the convenience of your smartphone.

#1 The Wellington App
What better place to start than the application that covers it all. The Wellington App is designed to be a one-stop shop for everything Welly - there are links to book flights, view public transport timetables, check the weather and browse local restaurants - all in one place. You can even see local news and upcoming community events, get a read on traffic conditions and plan your shopping trips. This one really is a must-have and is available on Android and iOS.

#2 Breadcrumbs
Breadcrumbs is a personalised travel app with the goal of “driving you to discover more of the experiences that you love”. The app recommends places and experiences to you based on your interests and preferences, allowing users to drop ‘Crumbs’ in places that they recommend. If you want to spend less time looking for locally acclaimed camping spots, walks, restaurants, cafes and more, this is the app for you.

Breadcrumbs is New Zealand wide, boasting a large user base in Wellington - perfect for those staying in the city, check out HiAtlas properties. Breadcrumbs is available from the iOS App Store.

#3 Food Ninja
While getting out and about is all well and good, sometimes you just need to relax at home - and what better way to do so than having food brought directly to your apartment?

Food Ninja is a food delivery service developed by two Wellington university students back in 2012, with the intention of bringing one of a kind restaurant service straight to the customers’ door. This prospect is particularly appealing to those staying in suburban apartments, where access to takeaway restaurants and fast food is more limited. You can download the Food Ninja app from the iOS App Store or the Google Play Store.

#4 OnzO
Wellington is unique in its compactness. One can walk anywhere in the CBD within an hour if they’re dedicated - but on a bike, the capital is truly an open world of possibilities.

OnzO is a dockless bicycle sharing service that is based out of an app on your phone. You top up your account, scan a bike,

and it will unlock - allowing you to ride wherever you please. Once you’re done, leave the bike where you are for someone else to find and go on your way. The service is cheap and easy to use, no matter whether you’re a tourist or a local on your morning commute. OnzO is especially useful for those staying in CBD apartments, where will always be a bike outside your door. The app is available for iOS and Android.

#5 Welly Walks
The Welly Walks app is very simple in its objective - to show you the best places to go out for a walk in Wellington. Perfect for any outdoorsy type, this is your opportunity to stretch your legs and see some sights. From the beautiful City to Sea Walkway to the historic Te Araroa Trail, you’ll never be short on places to explore. See a full list of walks on the Wellington City Council Website, or download the app from the iOS App Store or Google Play.
