Wellington is blessed to have so many wonderful parks to explore. From those located within the inner city through to parks in the greater Wellington area, there are plenty to explore. We have our own favourites, and today are sharing our top five Wellington parks with you.

Our Favourite 5 Wellington Parks

Put on a pair of sneakers and pack yourself a picnic to take with you while exploring these five top Wellington parks:

  1. Kaitoke Regional Park – about 10 minutes’ drive from Upper Hutt towards the Wairarapa, Kaitoke Regional Park is one of the region’s most popular parks. There are some wonderful walking tracks, a great swimming spot in the Hutt River and its claim to fame is being the location set for scenes from The Lord of the Rings. In fact, many people even get married in Rivendell, home to the elves!
  2. Wellington Botanic Gardens – located just out of the CBD, the Wellington Botanic Gardens have a mixture of flat and hilly walks. From the begonia house and the rose garden through to the duck pond and Bolton Street Cemetery, there is plenty to see.
  3. Otari-Wilton’s Bush – the only public botanic park in the country dedicated to planting native plants only, Otari-Wilton’s Bush is ideal to learn more about preservation of native flora and fauna. Guided walks are sometimes available and there’s plenty of space for your picnic, with an electric BBQ provided too.
  4. Queen Elizabeth Park – access to Queen Elizabeth Park is on the Kapiti Coast, just between Paekakariki and Raumati South at Mackays Crossing. Here you’ll be able to explore 650 hectares, including tracks for cycling, walking and horse riding.  There is also sealed tracks, making access using stroller and those with limited physical abilities easier access.
  5. Battle Hill Farm Forest Park – an actual working farm, this park is located on the Paekakariki Hill Road at Pauatahanui, close to Porirua city. Some of the tracks are shared with horse riders and mountain bikers, and depending on the season, you may also catch up with some nearly born lambs.
