When moving into a new space, it can be daunting to think about what you should do first. It can also be stressful if you’re occupied with work or other commitments straight away. On the flipside though, it can be a relaxing and rewarding experience if you have a to-do list to check off after moving in - here are some of our best ideas for making your new place feel like home.

1. Unpack

First things first  - it seems obvious, one of the best ways to feel like you’re settling in is unpacking your things. For those on shorter stays, get those clothes out of your suitcase and put them away. For longer term stays, put your boxes in their corresponding rooms - you don’t have to unpack them yet, but it’ll feel a lot better than having them all blocking up your entranceway!

2. Get Familiar With/Set Up Utilities

Usually, when moving into a new property you’ll need to sign up with a power company, sort out internet and possibly gas depending on where you are. In the case of HiAtlas properties, all this can be taken care of before you move in. Nonetheless, it’s good to get familiar with the property’s heating and kitchen amenities - not to mention connect all your devices to the WiFi - right after you arrive.

3. Introduce Yourself to the Neighbours

This is not a compulsory step, but for most it’s a good idea to introduce yourself to any neighbours you meet out by the letterbox or in the building elevator! Being surrounded by friendly faces can be a huge comfort, and failing that you’ll at the very least get to know the types that you’re sharing the general area with. Who knows, you might even make a friend or two.

4. Get Set Up

After you’ve moved in and unpacked the essentials, it might be time to start unpacking some boxes, stocking the kitchen and assembling/arranging furniture. HiAtlas properties always have the option of coming fully furnished, which is a big plus if your stay isn’t too long.

5. Familiarise Yourself With the Area

Getting out and about can serve as a welcome break from unpacking and setting up! Take a walk around the beautiful Wellington locale, scope out any interesting shops or eateries, maybe get a coffee or a bite to eat of you’re that way inclined. Search out the local supermarket, general store and public park, join a gym or attend a local pub quiz night to really get a feeling for the area.

6. Make the Space Your Own

As mentioned previously on the HiAtlas blog, it can have a marked effect on your general mood if you really take the time to imprint your own personal taste on your new living space! Get some house plants, hang art on the wall, choose a new rug or stock the the bookshelves with your favourite reads. This can be a great weekend job and really provides the cherry on top when it comes to feeling at home in your new place.

Whether it’s a week long stay or an extended live-in work placement, it really helps to have some method in place to counter the madness of moving house. No matter what order you do them in, each item on this list is a sure fire way of bringing you closer to settling in to your cosy new home. Good luck with the move!
