Top 6 Winter Activities in Auckland
If you are lucky enough to visit the City of Sails during winter, you’ll understand why Aucklanders love their city no matter what the weather. To get you in on the action too, we’ve made a list of our top 6 winter activities in Auckland that you shouldn’t miss:
- Head to the local snow – while it’s true you won’t find a snowy scene outside of your window, you certainly won’t miss out on snow altogether. Snowplanet is Auckland’s indoor snowy attraction where you can take some skiing lessons, throw snowballs at the kids and enjoy a yummy cheese fondue afterwards in their onsite restaurant.
- Visit the Domain Wintergardens – located in the Auckland Domain, the Domain Wintergardens has both a Temperate and Tropical house, which were built in the early 19th century. A Heritage site, these houses contain a stunning collection of plants, as well as being fascinating examples of early glasshouse architecture.
- Experiences some star gazing – head to the Stardome Observatory located in One Tree Hill domain and enjoy one of their planetarium shows or a walk through their gallery and exhibits. Shows are held both during the day and in the evening.
- Hit the trails – head out and enjoy some of Auckland’s popular tracks and walkways. From bush walks through to more formal gardens and sandy beachfronts, there are plenty of places to explore while the sun shines. Auckland winters do have sunny days hidden amongst the rainy ones you know.
- Grab a drink from one of the highest rooftop bars – grab a cocktail or enjoy a bottle of local wine with friends at the top of the world, also known as Bar Albert, located in the Voco Auckland City Centre Hotel.
- Visit the Sculptureum – a bit of a popular secret here, Matakana’s Sculptureum is a feast for the eyes and the stomach! A collection of quirky and unique artworks located both inside galleries and outside amongst landscaped gardens, it’s a must do activity in our books. And it’s not likely to be such a secret for much longer with their enticing restaurant menu …
